HULA IS ALIVE
OLA KA HULA
In spirit of yesterday being May Lei Day, I bring to you part 2 of my Hula series with Ms. Ashlee Tadeo. I brought Ashlee up to the Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau after she finished making her kupe'e and haku. I asked her what Hula means to her, what is it about Hula that makes it so special? Her response made her Hula immensely more powerful saying, "Hula is alive. When you dance, the ancestors dance with you. When you chant, the ancestors listen. You tell our ancestors' stories through hula. Hula is from within. It flows through us like the ocean."
"Ola ka hula. Ke ‘oe hula, hula nā kūpuna me ‘oe. Ho‘olohe nā kūpuna i kou oli. Ha‘i ‘oe i ko mākou kūpuna i nā mo‘olelo ma o ka hula. No loko mai ka hula. Kahe ia i loko o mākou e like me ke kai." Ashlee Tadeo
